What do cows do when it hails?

We took off for our adventure this morning at 4am, it was drizzly and foggy from St Paul all the way to Sioux falls. just before we got to our first rest stop (the corn palace in Mitchell) we were confronted by a wall of dark gray and teal colored clouds. I'm a geographer, and I've never seen a storm development like this one. I was driving, and really nervous because I was imagining suddenly having to drive like a storm chaser, except away from the tornado. Fortunately no tornadoes came of this storm, just Golf ball sized hail.

Our timing was impeccable because somehow the hail missed us, I'm still not sure how. All the cars in Mitchell have really bad hail damage, and smashed in windows. After driving under the storm, our car broke down and we had to get a tow. Thank you AAA for the rescue. Now we are stuck in Mitchell, North Dakota until Monday because all the mechanic shops are closed for the weekend.

We did finally get to the corn palace!

But really? What do the cows do when it hails? we passed thousands of them, do they just lay down and moo "ouch" every time they get hit? seriously, if you have any answers I'd like to hear them in the comments :D
